The Island of Waqwaq. This island too lies on the border of China. It is related that Waqwaq consists of one thousand seven hundred islands, and that a woman rules over them as sovereign.*1

Musa ibn Mubarak al-Sirafi relates: I went to that island and met the woman who is its ruler. She was seated on a throne made of gold; on her head was a crown of gold set with jewels, while she herself sat stark naked. To her right and left stood four thousand maidens, with crowns of gold on their heads.*2*3

They have interpreters for every language and converse through them. They also show merchants great respect and honour. Here is her picture:*2*3*4

The reason these islands are called Waqwaq is this: there are great trees there, and when their fruit ripens and is picked, a sound of "waq waq" is heard from the fruit.*5

The people of that country know the meaning of this sound and take omens from it about what is to come; and whatever they say comes about exactly. Gold mines are also very numerous.
