Of the spheres, some, relative to us, turn like a water-wheel; some run like a sword-belt slung across the shoulder; and some are [...](?). It stands(?) upon [...](?).*1 *2 *3

In some spheres only a single star is known. The number of stars in others none but God Most High knows, as with the sphere of the fixed stars. And some have no star at all, like the greatest sphere; the greatest sphere is called the atlas sphere.*3

The view of the ancients, and the agreed opinion of the astronomers who observe, Ptolemy above all, runs thus: the motions that exist in the world are forty-five. One is the motion of the greatest sphere, one the motion of the sphere of the fixed stars. Eighteen are the motions of the spheres of the upper planets, six for each of them. Two motions belong to the sphere of the Sun, six to the sphere of Venus, nine to the sphere of Mercury, six to the sphere of the Moon. And two motions lie below the sphere of the Moon: the motion of heaviness and the motion of lightness.

The stars of the other spheres are fixed in their spheres like the stone in a ring, and their motions follow the motions of the spheres. This is as far as the understanding of the wise has reached.

On the states of the sphere of the Moon. The sphere of the Moon is bounded by two parallel spherical surfaces whose centre is the centre of the world. Its upper surface touches the concave of the sphere of Mercury, its lower the sphere of fire. Its revolution is completed in twenty-eight days.*4

Its full moon(?) comes about in fourteen days; on that fourteenth day the Moon's filled side faces the centre of the earth.*4

They say that the thickness of the sphere of the Moon, the distance between its upper and lower surfaces, is one hundred and eighteen thousand and sixty-two miles. Whoever knows the second treatise of geometry can learn this.
