…and their motions, they wrote as follows: the sphere is a simple body, spherical in shape, moving about the centre, that is, turning on its own middle. Light motion(?), heavy motion(?), hot motion(?), cold motion(?), moist motion(?), dry motion(?), motion that admits rupture(?) and mending(?) — in the books of philosophy they set out detailed proofs of these. Our book is not for explaining those matters.*1*2
The sphere, however, is spherical; the spheres enclose one another, and from them all a single sphere is formed, which is called the sphere of the world. It is nine spheres: lowest the sphere of the Moon, then the sphere of Mercury, then the sphere of Venus, then the sphere of the Sun, then the sphere of Mars, then the sphere of Jupiter, then the sphere of Saturn, then the sphere of the fixed stars, then the sphere of spheres.
Each sphere has a place from which it does not move away; it moves with its bodies(?), and does not rest even for the blink of an eye.*3
Its speed of motion exceeds that of all things: so that while a horse given free rein on the field and galloping at full speed lifts one hoof and sets it down again, the greatest sphere travels three thousand parasangs.*3
Some turn from east to west, like the greatest sphere; others turn from west to east, like the sphere of the fixed stars. The spheres of the planets enclose one another, and the earth in their midst is like a ring. In this configuration:
