The lunar eclipse. What people call 'the moon is eclipsed' is this: the shadow of the earth falls between the sun and the moon, and since the moon's original nature is black, it appears as it was created.

The sun is larger than the earth, so the lines of rays falling from the sun on the earth are not parallel. When(?) they touch the earth's circumference and pass beyond it on the other side, the earth's shadow comes between in the form of a cone.*1

If, at the point opposite the sun on the ecliptic, the moon has no latitude, it falls wholly into the body of the earth's shadow cone, is entirely eclipsed, and stays eclipsed for some time. If the moon has latitude, only part of it is eclipsed.

Sometimes the body of the moon does not touch the shadow cone at all; then there is no eclipse. The reason is that when(?) the moon's latitude equals half the sum of the two diameters, that is, the diameter of the moon and the diameter of the shadow, there is no eclipse; if it is less than that, a partial eclipse occurs.*2
